Glaucoma refinement procedure
National Institute for Clinical Excellence issued guidelines that optometrists must refer any patient found to have ocular pressures above 21mm. Nationwide this resulted in a large number of referrals of patients who do not have glaucoma but have slightly raised ocular pressure. In the light of this South Essex PCT have now introduced a scheme to enable qualifying practitioners to carry out further tests under the NHS to reduce the number of patients needing to be referred to hospital.
Terence Mendoza has a contract with South East Essex Primary Care Trust
to provide the additional specialised tests required for the Glaucoma Refinement Scheme. Should such refinement be required you will be booked for a further consultation. At this further visit the thickness of your cornea will be measured using a pachymeter, using ultrasound, the pressure will be remeasured using a Goldmann Applanation Tonometer and your field of view will be reassessed using a Henson Computerised Field Screener. If findings from this visit are also borderline, a further test will be booked and only if those findings are borderline will you be referred to hospital.
