Many of you may know something about diabetes. The word possibly
conjures up images of regular injections, syringes and special
diets. Perhaps there is someone in your family who is diabetic?
If so, you will be well aware that a special diet, possibly
tablets, and occasionally insulin, are lifelines for thousands
of diabetes sufferers. Unfortunately, diabetes may also cause
eye problems, especially in those who have suffered from diabetes
for a long period of time There are simple explanations about
how and why diabetes can cause changes within the eye, with
pictures of the back of the diabetic eye, here
at this site.
It is important that diabetes is properly controlled and that all diabetes
sufferers have regular eye examinations. In some parts of the UK, including
Essex, screening programmes already exist, where optometrists work closely
with G.Ps to ensure that if any evidence
of diabetes appears in the eye it is detected at the earliest opportunity.
Treatment can then be arranged to prevent loss of vision.

Having diabetes can be difficult enough. If you do suffer
from diabetes ensure you have the best possible care by following your
doctor's advice and by having regular eye examinations.
