A little 'behind the scenes' at the practice, and beyond...

Rochford County Primary School Science Week 2007

I was invited to give a talk to several classes at this school - it was certainly entertaining for me, and I think for the pupils too! Find out more about the visit and the science project here.

Hearing Loops

Both our main consulting rooms have now been equipped with Hearing Loops. Should you wish to take advantage of this system simply advise the optometrist and switch your hearing aid to the 'Loop' position.

How well do you hear?

We are delighted to tell you that we now have a visiting audiologist on a regular basis. If you are not sure whether your hearing is as good as it should be why not book a hearing assessment? The assessment is totally free and without any commitment. Our audiologist is registered with the Hearing Aid Council. If you already use a hearing aid our audiologist will be pleased to check and service your aid, without charge (there are restrictions on what servicing the NHS will allow on their aids)

Diabetic Screening

For many years we have carried out diabetic screening in conjunction with your GP and the local hospital. If you are diabetic you will receive notification that the hospital intend to introduce a 'mobile screening service' at selected locations.

I am pleased to reassure you that we will continue to offer the diabetic screening service for patients who wish to maintain continuity. However the NHS will no longer subsidise the screening fee for those attending these screenings.

The NHS will still continue to pay for your regular sight test which will remain free ; diabetic screenings carried out at the practice will cost £18.00 (as one of our patients said, "less outlay than a tank of petrol"!).

Government policy encourages you to make an informed choice over treatment, so if you do prefer to remain under our screening program you may do so.

The next step: To continue to receive diabetic screening at this practice please advise the NHS when they notify you about the changes that you wish to ‘opt out’ of their camera screening service. Of course you may 'opt in' to the new hospital system at any time in the future.

Children's Eyesight

Recent research by the British College of Optometrists has highlighted that one in four parents has never taken their child for an eye examination. 13% think their children's fitness, teeth and clothes are more important than their vision!

Interestingly, when questioned, many of those parents who had never taken their child for an examination thought their children's eyes were examined at school, when in fact this is rarely the case.

20% of parents also believed, incorrectly, that their children needed to be able to read before they could have a sight test.

A good education is vital, yet if a child is unable to see properly, they won't achieve their full potential at school. So if your child has not had an eye examination within the past year then you should be making that a priority! And remember, the NHS pays for your child's sight test. Click here to find out more.
